Speech Therapy
WHAT IS SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY?
A pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP), commonly known as a “speech therapist”, teaches children the essential verbal and non-verbal communication skills needed to successfully learn, interact with others, and function optimally within a variety of environments. Impaired communication can impact every aspect of a child’s life and early intervention is crucial.
WHEN SHOULD SPEECH THERAPY START?
As early as possible! Early intervention is KEY as it can change the course of a child's development and improve outcomes for the child socially, academically, etc. If you have concerns with your child's speech or language skills, consult with your pediatrician or a speech language pathologist to determine if your child is meeting the developmental milestones for their age.
IS SPEECH THERAPY REALLY EFFECTIVE?
Though it often looks like play, speech therapy services are rooted in evidence based practices making them effective (and fun!). There is a purpose behind each activity and items utilized within the sessions are intentionally picked to address your child's areas of need. As a parent or patient, you can help ensure progress by completing carry over activities and following the recommendations of your therapist.
